The resort of Magaluf and its close neighbour Palma Nova are based on the western coast of Palma Bay on the mediterranean jewel of Majorca. The twin resorts are just a 5 minute taxi fare or a a half hour minute walk for the more energetic. Most holiday destinations in Majorca are dominated by either English or German tourists. Both resorts of Magaluf and Palma Nova are rock solid British dominated resorts.
That said, these resorts do not appeal to the more sophisticated British visitors. A lot of visitors find Palma Nova and Magaluf in Majorca a bit tacky and prefer quieter Mallorcan resorts such as Pollensa Mallorca. Maybe not quite a sunny version of Blackpool or Southend, but there are some similarities. Most people either adore these towns or dislike them with a vengance. Both Magaluf and Palma Nova feature a large number of British owned and run pubs, sports bars and eateries catering for the requirements of the biggest visitors in these resorts, the British tourists. These is no shortage of places selling a Full English Breakfast at very low prices and no one will have difficulty to find a place to watch either live football or Test cricket, together with a pint of whatever you fancy or a proper cup of tea. There is even will discover a British Medical practice or a British dentists which is located on the main street in Palma Nova. Everything considered, a home from home for British people in virtually all things except for the weather which is usually fantastically hot in Summer.
Magaluf itself is definitely famous as as a party town. There are loads of discos and bars where you can dance the night away until the small hours. Palma Nova is still quite a lively destination, but it is certainly a lot lower key than Magaluf and probably more suitable for families who don’t want to be on holiday smack bang in the midsts of a party zone. Magaluf has also become a leading resort for Hen and Stag groups. The behaviour in the resort does get somewhat rowdy to say the least in the main holiday season. Seeing as Palma Nova is only a short taxi ride, bus ride or 30 minute stroll from Magaluf, so holidaymakers based in Palma Nova will will find that the clubs and pubs of Magaluf is within range. Both resorts offer superb beaches of beautiful fine sand. There is some natural shade from the pine trees at the Magaluf end of the beach in Palma Nova. There are plenty of sun beds and sun shades available for hire on the beaches, though a little pricey in peak season. I was charged 10.50 Euro for just two sunbeds and a parasol in Palma Nova in summer 2009.
Bus transfers from Palma Airport typically takes around 30 minutes to either Magaluf or Palma Nova. Usually car hire in Magaluf or at Palma de Mallorca (PMI) airport is usually quite cheap when compared against other Mediterranean destinations however rental rates in summer 2009 went to silly levels due to there being a general shortage of cars to rent which caused a supply imbalance. If you plan to rent a car from Palma consider buying a map of Majorca before departing.
